Un compañero de trabajo con quien compartimos la afición a las películas -bueno, casi todos son felices viendo pelis y cuando uno escribe de ellas tienden a recomendar algunas, lo cual es genial- me dijo “¡oye Peter, mira! salió una película de western y terror” y ambos quedamos con un tremendo signo de interrogación sobre la cabeza: ¿Realmente se podían mezclar ambos géneros y obtener algo de calidad?
Empecé a indagar y la película en cuestión se llamaba Bone Tomahawk, que es una suerte de hacha rústica hecha de hueso de animal y que utilizaban nativos de aquellos tiempos; lo que se ajusta casi con calzador a la cinta, ya que va de un cuarteto de vaqueros que irán al rescate de la esposa de uno de ellos, quien fuera secuestrada por indios, mientras prestaba ayuda a un extraño recién llegado al pueblo.
Ya de ver los primeros cinco minutos me sentí incómodo y noté que podía estar ante algo destacable.
Me dejaron respirar para hacer el primer acercamiento a los personajes y al conflicto, para luego retomar el suspenso. Un suspenso denso y muy bien logrado que se instaura por el resto del filme de la mano con una sensación de angustia perpetua.
Ya cuando emprenden el viaje en pos de su misión, la historia avanza de forma lenta y pausada en conjunto con una larguísima exposición de los personajes que no se hace para nada tediosa y que se agradece, ya que esto le permite a la película desarrollarse a paso firme y seguro
No sé si sea apta para todos. Es cruda. Los efectos resultan creíbles y te aseguro que lo pasaras tan mal o peor que los personajes al ver sus tribulaciones en la pantalla. Además de que el enemigo de nuestros protagonistas está realmente bien realizado; se trata de una tribu de indios caníbales. ¡Qué más terrorífico que algo que te puedes topar en la vida real! y en esa época, llegas a pensar, esto pudo estar a la orden del día, por lo que todo trabaja de maravilla.. no hay un momento en que no te preguntes si nuestros héroes podrán lograr su cometido.
Técnicamente impecable, con una fotografía y un soundtrack precisos, Bone Tomahawk es por lejos lo mejor que he visto este año en terror. Los roles protagónicos están encabezados por Kurt Russell (uno de los mejores sheriff de todo el oeste) y Patrick Wilson, mientras que la dirección y el guión pertenecen a S. Craig Zahler, quien ya ganó el premio a Mejor Director en el festival de Sitges por ésta misma película.
